QUANTUM QX2 High Performance Mains Filter

« back
Home > Mains Conditioners & Blocks > Nordost/Quantum QRT
The Qx2 unit contains a pair of QRT field generators in a specially designed, mechanically inert casework. Fed by a standard 15A IEC input, it is available with a US, Schuko or UK type AC outlet. It does not limit peak voltage swing or alter the power supply impedance and is capable of passing sufficient current to supply an entire system.

The Qx2 can be used individually, between the wall socket and your power strip, or within the system itself to feed an individual component. It is particularly effective used in this role in conjunction with a Qx4 feeding the system as a whole.

Dimensions (WxHxD): 270 x 80 x 195mm
Weight (Net): 4.75kg
Input: 15A IEC
Output: US, Schuko or 13A UK
Fuse: None

Quantum units can be applied to almost any hi-fi or AV system with results that far outweigh their cost. Their impact is neither subtle nor hard to hear (or see), but in the case of a hi-fi system, there is a simple approach that will make appreciating the Quantum effect even easier:

  • The Quantum unit should be connected between the system and the wall. If you are using a distribution unit such as a Quantum Base or Nordost Thor, simply plug that into the Qx unit. If not, connect the pre-amp or integrated amp into the Quantum instead. Because the Qx2 and Qx4 are field-based devices, they will still affect the performance of the whole system. They should also be placed as close to the system as possible.
  • Using the rear-mounted switch on the Quantum, make sure that the unit is switched off.
  • Play a 30 to 45 second excerpt from a familiar track.
  • Stop the CD, turn on the Quantum unit and replay the same cut.

The music will seem louder, clearer and more natural, with greater presence and a more coherent sense of space. Over time you’ll also notice that you are hearing the system less and the performers more, something which is particularly apparent on intimate or live performances, voice and piano (think Holly Cole). Once you’ve heard the Quantum affect, you’ll always hear it, whatever the music, and whilst you might hear it first or most readily on something small scale and acoustic, the results on larger scale music can be even more important.

  • As field generators, the effect of the Qx units is generally greater the closer they are placed to the system or equipment. However, a systematic approach can deliver unexpected dividends when using more than one unit. See the suggested layouts for guidance, but as usual, experimentation is the key.
  • Although the field generated by the Quantum units is extensive, it’s most powerful closest to the generator. That’s why we recommend passing the AC power for your system (a particularly potent source of field interference) through the Quantum device.
  • Once you have treated the main system, you can use QRT units with your loudspeakers. When used in this way, the Quantum units should be placed as closely as possible to the most powerful magnetic structures. In most (but not all) cases, that means the motor of the bass driver. Simply connect the Quantum units to the AC power and then experiment with placement.
